Hear it before you read it.

French spelling is regular — far more than English — but the rules are not the English rules. This module gives you every sound, how to make it with a Bengali mouth, the letters that are silent, how words join together, and the numbers to 100. Every French word on this page can be heard: click 🔊.

Reading the Bengali pronunciation key

How this course writes French sounds in Bengali script — approximations, always paired with 🔊

Bengali script cannot show every French sound exactly, so the course uses fixed conventions. Learn these five and the rest is readable:

WrittenFrench soundHow to make itExample
ঁ (চন্দ্রবিন্দু)a nasal vowel — an / on / in / unSay the vowel and let air through the nose; do not say a final n or mbon → বোঁ · vin → ভাঁ · blanc → ব্লাঁ
উ্যu [y] — the hardest oneSay ই and, keeping the tongue there, round the lips tightly as for উtu → ত্যু · rue → র্যু · salut → সাল্যু
অ্য / ও (rounded)e [ə], eu [ø/œ]Say এ with rounded lips; in fast speech the [ə] almost disappearsje → জ্য · le → ল্য · deux → দ্য · peur → প্যর
রr [ʁ]Not the tongue-tip র. Make it at the back, like gently clearing the throat — a soft গ-position frictionParis → পারি · merci → মেরসি · rouge → রুজ
জ vs জ়j / g(e,i) = [ʒ] · z / s-between-vowels = [z]জ is like "zh" (measure); জ় (with nukta) is a buzzing z — Bengali has neither exactly, so start with the Englishje → জ্য · jour → জুর · zéro → জ়েরো · maison → মেজ়ঁ

Also: French t, d are dental (ত, দ), p, k are unaspirated (প, ক — never ফ, খ), é = এ, è/ê/ai = অ্যা, and the stress always falls on the last syllable of a word or phrase — flat, then a slight rise at the end.

সংক্ষেপেঁ = নাকি স্বর (শেষে ন/ম বলবেন না) · উ্য = ই বলতে বলতে ঠোঁট গোল · অ্য/ও = গোল ঠোঁটে এ · র = গলার পেছন থেকে · জ = ইংরেজি "zh", জ় = z · ত/দ দন্ত্য · প/ক অঘোষ, শ্বাস ছাড়া · é = এ, è/ai = অ্যা · শেষ সিলেবলে জোর।

2 · Vowels — the spelling → sound map

French has around 12 oral vowel sounds. Each spelling below always makes the same sound — that is the good news.

SpellingSound · বাংলাMouthExamples
a · à · â[a] আOpen, like Bengali আami আমি · la লা · gâteau গাতো
é · -er · -ez · et[e] এClosed e, lips spread; the endings -er/-ez of verbs sound exactly like écafé কাফে · parler পার্লে · parlez পার্লে · et এ
è · ê · ai · ei · e+consonant[ɛ] অ্যাOpen e, like Bengali অ্যা in "ব্যাগ"mère ম্যার · tête ত্যাত · mais ম্যা · neige ন্যাজ · elle অ্যাল
e (end of syllable, unstressed)[ə] অ্যWeak, rounded; often dropped in fast speechle ল্য · je জ্য · petit প্যতি · samedi সাম্‌দি
i · y · î[i] ইLike Bengali ই, lips spreadlit লি · stylo স্তিলো · île ইল
o · ô · au · eau[o] ওClosed o, lips roundedmot মো · hôtel ওতেল · aussi ওসি · eau ও · beau বো
o + pronounced consonant[ɔ] অOpen o, like Bengali অ in "অনেক"porte পর্ত · homme অম · école একল
ou · où[u] উLike Bengali উ — this is the easy uvous ভু · où উ · nous নু · jour জুর
u · û[y] উ্যTongue as for ই, lips as for উ. Practise: say "ই… ই… " then round the lips without moving the tonguetu ত্যু · rue র্যু · sûr স্যুর · musique ম্যুজ়িক
eu · œu (closed)[ø] অ্য (long, rounded)Say এ, round the lipsdeux দ্য · peu প্য · bleu ব্ল্য · vœu ভ্য
eu · œu + consonant[œ] অ্যা (rounded)Say অ্যা, round the lipspeur প্যর · sœur স্যর · fleur ফ্ল্যর · heure অ্যর
oi · oy[wa] ওয়াTwo sounds: quick উ then আmoi মোয়া · trois ত্রোয়া · voyage ভোয়াইয়াজ
-ill- · y between vowels · -ail · -eil[j] য়/ইয়Like Bengali য়fille ফিয় · famille ফামিয় · travail ত্রাভাই · soleil সোলেয় · payer পেয়ে
The three you must drillu [y], eu [ø/œ] and ou [u] are three different vowels, and mixing them changes meaning: tu / tout / te, vu / vous / vœu, dessus / dessous (on top / underneath!). Say each triple ten times a day for the first month. u, eu, ou — তিনটি আলাদা স্বর। প্রতিদিন ১০ বার ত্রয়ীগুলো বলুন।

3 · Nasal vowels — where the চন্দ্রবিন্দু lives

A vowel followed by n or m in the same syllable becomes nasal; the n/m is not pronounced

SpellingSound · বাংলাExamples
an · en · am · em[ɑ̃] আঁ — open, deep, nasalenfant আঁফাঁ · France ফ্রাঁস · temps তাঁ · chambre শাঁব্র · cent সাঁ
on · om[ɔ̃] ওঁ — rounded, nasalbon বোঁ · non নোঁ · maison মেজ়ঁ · nom নোঁ · onze ওঁজ়
in · im · ain · ein · un · yn[ɛ̃] অ্যাঁ — spread, nasal (un/um is [œ̃] but most speakers merge it)vin ভাঁ · pain পাঁ · faim ফাঁ · plein প্লাঁ · un অঁ · lundi লঁদি · sympa সাঁপা
-ien[jɛ̃] ইয়াঁbien বিয়াঁ · chien শিয়াঁ · canadien কানাদিয়াঁ
-oin[wɛ̃] ওয়াঁloin লোয়াঁ · moins মোয়াঁ · point পোয়াঁ

When it is NOT nasal: if the n/m is followed by a vowel or doubled, the vowel is oral and the n is pronounced: bon বোঁ → bonne বন · an আঁ → année আনে · vin ভাঁ → vinaigre ভিনেগ্র. This is how French marks feminine and plural: américain আমেরিকাঁ (m) vs américaine আমেরিকেন (f).

সংক্ষেপেan/en = আঁ, on = ওঁ, in/ain/ein/un = অ্যাঁ। n/m-এর পর স্বরবর্ণ থাকলে নাকি হয় না, n উচ্চারিত হয়: bon বোঁ কিন্তু bonne বন।

4 · Consonants — the ones that differ from English and Bengali

SpellingSound · বাংলাRuleExamples

p · t · k · b · d · gপ ত ক ব দ গNo aspiration on p/t/k; t/d dental. Exactly Bengalipapa পাপা · tante তাঁত · table তাব্ল

5 · Silent letters — the rule that unlocks reading

Most final consonants are silent. So is the final -e. So are -ent verb endings.

  • Final consonants are usually silent: petit প্যতি · grand গ্রাঁ · Paris পারি · beaucoup বোকু · nez নে · blanc ব্লাঁ.
  • Exception — the CaReFuL rule: final c, r, f, l are usually pronounced: sac সাক · bonjour বোঁজুর · neuf ন্যফ · hôtel ওতেল · avec আভেক. (But -er infinitives: r silent — parler পার্লে.)
  • Final -e is silent but makes the consonant before it sound: petit প্যতি → petite প্যতিত · grand গ্রাঁ → grande গ্রাঁদ · français ফ্রাঁস্যা → française ফ্রাঁস্যাজ়. This is how you hear feminine forms.
  • -ent on verbs is silent: ils parlent ইল পার্ল · elles mangent এল মাঁজ. (But the noun/adverb -ent is [ɑ̃]: lentement, un parent.)
  • -es, -s, -x plurals are silent: les tables লে তাব্ল · des amis দেজ়ামি.
সংক্ষেপেশেষের ব্যঞ্জনবর্ণ সাধারণত নীরব (petit = প্যতি)। ব্যতিক্রম: c, r, f, l (CaReFuL) প্রায়ই উচ্চারিত। শেষের -e নীরব, কিন্তু আগের ব্যঞ্জন শোনায় (petite = প্যতিত)। ক্রিয়ার -ent নীরব। বহুবচনের -s/-x নীরব।
PracticeRead these aloud, then check: Les enfants mangent des fruits. Ils sont très contents. Le petit chat noir dort.
লেজ়াঁফাঁ মাঁজ দে ফ্রুই। ইল সোঁ ত্র্যা কোঁতাঁ। ল্য প্যতি শা নোয়ার দর।

6 · Liaison, enchaînement and elision — why you cannot hear where words end

Liaison

A normally silent final consonant is pronounced when the next word starts with a vowel or h muet, and it joins onto that word. s/x → [z], d → [t], n → [n], t → [t].

  • les amis লেজ়ামি · des enfants দেজ়াঁফাঁ · nous avons নুজ়াভোঁ · vous êtes ভুজ়্যাত
  • un ami অঁনামি · mon école মোঁনেকল · on a ওঁনা · en avion আঁনাভিওঁ
  • c'est un স্যাতঁ · petit ami প্যতিতামি · grand homme গ্রাঁতম

Compulsory after: articles and determiners (les, des, un, mon, ces), pronouns (nous, vous, ils, on), single-syllable prepositions (en, dans, chez), est/sont in fixed phrases, and adjective + noun. Never after et: et | un café.

Enchaînement

A pronounced final consonant simply links to the next vowel: il a ইলা · elle est এল্যা · avec elle আভেকেল · quatre heures কাত্র-অ্যর. Sentences flow as one stream — this is why native speech sounds fast.

Elision

le, la, je, me, te, se, ne, de, que, ce drop their vowel before a vowel or h muet and take an apostrophe:

  • le ami → l'ami · la école → l'école · le hôtel → l'hôtel
  • je habite → j'habite · je aime → j'aime · ne aime → n'aime
  • ce est → c'est · que est-ce que → qu'est-ce que · de accord → d'accord

si elides only before il/ils: s'il vous plaît. tu never elides in writing.

7 · Accents — what each one does

AccentNameEffectExamples
éaccent aigu · আক্‌সাঁ এগ্যুOnly on e; makes it [e] এété · café · école · marié
è à ùaccent grave · আক্‌সাঁ গ্রাভOn e: [ɛ] অ্যা. On a and u: no sound change — distinguishes words (a / à, ou / où)mère · très · à · où
ê â î ô ûaccent circonflexe · সির্‌কোঁফ্লেক্সê = [ɛ]; â/ô slightly longer; often marks a lost s (forêt = forest, hôpital = hospital)fête · forêt · hôpital · château · sûr
ë ï ütréma · ত্রেমাPronounce the vowel separately from the one beforeNoël নোএল · naïf নাইফ · maïs মাইস
çcédille · সেদিয়Makes c = [s] স before a, o, ufrançais · garçon · ça · reçu

Accents are part of spelling: a (has) and à (to) are different words; ou (or) and où (where). In the DELF writing test, missing accents cost marks on "orthographe". The exercises flag them in orange so you build the habit.
