Les habitudes d'avant — The imparfait, and telling a story

The full imparfait: how things used to be, what was happening, what the scene looked like. Then the central skill of A2 narration — combining imparfait (background, habits) with passé composé (events) to tell a story that happened to you.

গঠন সবসময় এক: nous-রূপ − ons + ais/ais/ait/ions/iez/aient।

The four uses:

  1. Habit / repetition in the past (used to): Quand j'étais petit, je jouais au cricket tous les jours.
  2. Description — people, places, weather, feelings, age: Il faisait chaud, la rue était calme, j'avais dix ans et j'étais content.
  3. An action in progress (was …ing) — often interrupted by an event: Je dormais quand le téléphone a sonné.
  4. Politeness / suggestion: Je voulais vous demander… · Si on allait au cinéma ?

3.2 · Imparfait vs passé composé — the decision

Imparfait — the backgroundPassé composé — the events
What things were like: setting, weather, people, feelingsWhat happened: actions with a beginning and end
What used to happen, habits, repeated actionsWhat happened once, or a specific number of times
What was going on when something else happenedThe thing that interrupted or moved the story forward
A film's scenery: the camera pans slowlyA film's action: cut, cut, cut

The same verb, both tenses, different meaning:

  • J'avais peur (I was afraid — a state) / J'ai eu peur (I got a fright — a moment).
  • Je savais (I knew) / J'ai su (I found out).
  • Il voulait partir (he wanted to) / Il a voulu partir (he tried / decided to).
  • C'était bien (it was nice — description) / Ça a été difficile (it turned out hard — the whole completed episode).

Pendant que (while) links two imparfaits or an imparfait and an event: Pendant que je cuisinais, mon fils dormait.

Saifur's mother on a video call, with Ayaan on his lap.

Saifur
Maman, raconte à Ayaan comment c'était, Dhaka, quand tu étais petite.
Mum, tell Ayaan what Dhaka was like when you were little.
Oh my… It was another city! There were far fewer cars. We got around by rickshaw or on foot. The streets were quiet, and there were trees everywhere.
Saifur
Et l'école ?
And school?
I walked to school with my cousins. We didn't have phones, obviously! In the evening, the whole family ate together, and afterwards we listened to the radio. Your grandfather told stories.
Saifur
Do you remember one story in particular?
Mère
Oui !
Yes! One day, during the monsoon, it was raining very hard. We were at home, and suddenly water came into the courtyard. Your grandfather took a boat — a real little boat! — and went to fetch the neighbours. We laughed all night. It was dangerous, but it was magnificent.
Saifur
And now, is it better or worse?
Both. Before, we had fewer things, but we had more time. Now, I can see my grandson in Canada on a screen. That's a miracle.

6 · Tâches

Tâche 1 · Production écrite — Quand j'étais enfant (100 mots)

Describe your childhood in Dhaka: where you lived, what the neighbourhood was like, your daily habits, school, games, one thing that has changed since. Mostly imparfait, plus one or two events in the passé composé.

Tell an anecdote that really happened to you — a surprise, a small accident, a funny moment, the day your son was born — in two minutes. Structure: Setting (imparfait: when, where, weather, how you felt) → Events (passé composé: d'abord, puis, tout à coup, ensuite) → Ending and feeling (finalement, c'était…). Record, listen, redo.

Count: 9 imparfait for scene and states, 8 passé composé for events. That balance is what examiners listen for.

7 · Culture — Nostalgia, and how French speakers tell stories

A good short story with a punchline is social currency in France and Québec, and it is exactly the DELF A2 monologue.
  • C'était mieux avant ("it was better before") is a cliché people joke about; use it and you will get a laugh. De mon temps… ("in my day…") is what grandparents say.
  • Stories from Bangladesh — monsoon, family, cricket in the street, the 1971 generation — are genuinely interesting to French-speaking listeners and examiners, who hear the same Paris-metro anecdotes all day. Your background is an asset in the speaking test; use it.
  • Québec has a strong oral storytelling tradition (les contes, le conteur), and a famous nostalgia for la Révolution tranquille and the rural past.
